Abby Wambach is an American retired soccer player, author, and coach. She is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and FIFA Women's World Cup champion.

Abby Wambach’s birth took place on June 2, 1980, in Rochester, New York, USA. She was born as Mary Abigail Wambach to her mother Judy Wambach and her father Pete Wambach. She was raised by her parents along with her six older siblings- four brothers and two sisters.

For education, Abby Wambach attended Our Lady of Mercy High School from 1994 to 1998. After graduation, she enrolled at the University of Florida on a full athletic scholarship from 1998 to 2001.

Abby Wambach married her longtime girlfriend  Sarah Huffman on  October 5, 2013. Huffman is also a former professional player and has played for Portland Thorns FC of the NWSl. In her September 2016 biography, Wambach revealed that she and her wife are divorcing.

In November 2016, Abby Wambach confirmed that she was dating Glennon Doyle Melton, an author. They announced their engagement in February 2017, and the couple married on May 14, 2017. Wambach does not have children from any of her relationships.

From her marriage to Doyle, she is a stepmother to three children- Chase, Tish, and Amma, whose father is ex-husband Craig Melton.

College games

While a student at the University of Florida, she played for the Florida Gators women's soccer team from 1998 to 2001. Her career records were 96 goals, 50 assists, 242 points, 24 game-winning goals, and 10 hat tricks, setting a new record at her university.

Club Career

In 2002, Abby Wambach was selected by the Washington Freedom during the first round of the 2002 WUSA Draft for the second season of the Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA). She played for the team until 2003.

In the summer of 2005, she played for the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) where she appeared in five games, scoring five goals and serving three assists. 

After the new professional league, Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) was formed in 2008, Wambach was assigned to the Washington Freedom. 

After WPS was suspended in early 2012, she was allocated to the National Women's Soccer League club,  Western New York Flash, and to the U.S. women's national soccer team (USWNT) from 2003 to 2015.

International games

Abby Wambach played in the FIFA Women's World Cup (2003, 2007, 2011, 2015) and Summer Olympics (2004, 2008, 2012). She won two gold medals in the Olympics.

She retired in 2015, having won six U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year awards, set a record for the highest all-time goal scorer, and was a FIFA Women's World Cup champion.

She is also an author and has written autobiographies, Forward: A Memoir (2016), Forward: My Story Young Readers' Edition (2016), and the inspirational book Wolfpack.
