Alan Titchmarsh – Birth, Parents, Siblings

Alan Titchmarsh was born on 2 May 1949 in Ilkley, West Riding of Yorkshire, England. His birth name/ full name is Alan Fred Titchmarsh. His mother’s name is Bessie Titchmarsh, and his father’s name is Alan Fred Titchmarsh Sr. His mother worked as a textile mill worker, and his father worked as a textile mill worker. He is not the only child of his parents and has three siblings - two brothers and a sister who is four years younger.

In 1964, at the age of 15, Alan Titchmarsh left school and went to work as an apprentice gardener with Ilkley Council. When he was 18, Titchmarsh left Ilkley Council to join Shipley Art and Technology Institute and City and Guilds, where he studied horticulture.

He then went on to study at Hertfordshire College of Agriculture and Horticulture and then at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, where he earned a Diploma in Horticulture. His ethnicity is English.

Titchmarsh is a married man. He married Alison on July 26, 1975, after dating. They have two daughters together, Polly (born 1979) and Camilla (born 1981). He is also a grandfather. He has two grandsons (born in 2012 and born in December 2013) and a granddaughter (born in June 2013).

Alan Titchmarsh – Career

Early Career

After graduating from the Royal Botanic Gardens, he worked there as a supervisor and later as a staff trainer. He left his job at the Royal Botanic Gardens to pursue a career in gardening journalism in the year 1974.

Alan Titchmarsh’s first TV appearance was on the BBC’s show Nationwide as a horticulture expert. He then went on to (co) host shows or appear in shows such as Chelsea Flower Show (1983-2013), Breakfast Time, Open Air, Pebble Mill at One (1991-1996), Gardeners' World (1996), Ground Force (1997), How To Be A Gardener, and Songs of Praise.

He also has presented Nature of Britain (2007), 20th Century Roadshow (2005), The Great British Village Show (2007), The Alan Titchmarsh Show (September 2007- November 2014), Popstar to Operastar (2010), Love Your Garden (2011-present), The Queen's Garden (2014),  Masterpiece (February 2016), Secrets of the National (TrustFebruary 2017).

He has written Only Dad (November 2001), Love and Dr. Devon (2016), The Last Lighthouse Keeper (1999), Mr MacGregor (1998), Bring Me Home (2014), and Mr Gandy's Grand Tour (2016). His books about gardening include the How to Garden series.

Alan Titchmarsh – Health issues

Alan Titchmarsh has been open about his family’s history of heart problems. His father died of a sudden heart attack in 1986 at the age of 62. No wonder he too fears the same after he suffered pain in his chest.

He was then rushed to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with gallstones and soon had surgery to remove his gallbladder.
