Amy Goodman was born on April 13, 1957, in Long Island, New York, United States. Her mother, Dorothy Goodman, worked as a literature teacher and, after retirement, worked as a social worker and is the co-founder of the SANE/Freeze peace group. Whereas her father, George Goodman, worked as an ophthalmologist. He was a founding member of the Long Island chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility, too.

She has siblings as well, including a brother named David Goodman, who works as an investigative journalist and an author. The siblings were all raised in New York.

After graduating from high school, Amy Goodman attended Radcliffe College. She further attended Harvard University and graduated with a degree in anthropology in 1984. She also studied for a year at the College of the Atlantic.

Amy Goodman – Career

In 1986, she started to work as the news director of WBAI in New York City. Ten years later, in 1996, she co-founded Democracy Now! The War and Peace Report. 

As an investigative journalist 

Amy Goodman and Allan Nairn witnessed the Santa Cruz Massacre, and the two were also badly beaten by Indonesian soldiers. There were people covering the East Timor independence movement. In 1998, along with journalist Jeremy Scahill, she detailed the confrontation between villagers and the Nigerian Army as well as recorded Chevron Corporation’s role in it.

Books

Amy Goodman has authored a number of books over the years. The title of the books is Botulinum Toxin Type A in the Management of Cerebral Palsy (2002), The Exception to the Rulers (2004), Static: Government Liars, Media Cheerleaders, and the People Who Fight Back (2006), Standing Up to the Madness: Ordinary Heroes in Extraordinary Times (2008).

This was followed by books including Breaking the Sound Barrier (2009), The Occupy Handbook (2012), The Silenced Majority: Stories of Uprisings, Occupations, Resistance, and Hope (2012), and Democracy Now!: Twenty Years Covering the Movements Changing America (2016).

Amy Goodman – Legal Issue

Amy Goodman was arrested and detained during the 2008 Republican National Convention along with several of her Democracy Now! colleagues. She was charged with obstructing a legal process in addition to interfering with a police officer. The charges were later dropped, and Goodman and her colleagues were released.

She was detained for approximately 90 minutes on November 25, 2009, at the Douglas border crossing into Canada. She was on the way to a meeting at the Vancouver Public Library. The officials wanted to know if she would be speaking about the 2010 Olympic Games. She was later released with a control document, permitting her to stay in Canada for the next 48 hours.

In September 2016, an arrest warrant was sent out for Amy Goodman's name for a riot. She had covered the Dakota Access Pipeline protests in Morton County, North Dakota, where her footage "showed security personnel pepper-spraying and siccing attack dogs on demonstrators."

Amy Goodman turned herself in. She was supported by the Committee to Protect Journalists, which stated, "This arrest warrant is a transparent attempt to intimidate reporters from covering protests of significant public interest. [...] Authorities in North Dakota should stop embarrassing themselves, drop the charges against Amy Goodman, and ensure that all reporters are free to do their jobs."

The case was dismissed on October 17, 2016, as no probable cause was found to support the stated riot charge.
