Damian Lewis’s birth took place on  11 February 1971 in St John's Wood, London, England. His birth name/full name is Damian Watcyn Lewis. His mother’s name is Charlotte Mary Bowater, and his father’s name is John Watcyn Lewis, a City insurance broker. His mother passed away in a fatal car accident in 2001.

He is not the only child of his parents and has three siblings - two younger brothers named Willian Lewis and Gareth Lewis, and a sister named Amanda Lewis.

When Damian Lewis was a young boy, he used to visit his relatives who were then living in the US. For his education, Lewis attended Ashdown House School and later enrolled at Eton College. In 1993, he graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, having joined in 1990.

His ethnicity includes Welsh, English, Sephardi-Jewish, Ashkenazi-Jewish, and Scottish.

Lewis has been in several high-profile relationships. He dated Katie Razzall for a year in 2001. While he and Razzall were dating, he was also in a relationship with Freya Stafford. Lewis was in a relationship with Stafford from 2001 to September 2003.

He then went on to date Kristin Davis from 2003 to 2004. He had a short fling with British actress Sophia Myles in 2005 before finally dating Helen McCrory.

Damian Lewis is now a married man. He married his girlfriend of two years, Helen McCrory, also an actress, on  4 July 2007. Together with his wife, he has two children - a daughter named Manon McCrory-Lewis, who was born on 8 September 2006, and a son named Gulliver Lewis, who was born on 2 November 2007.

Lewis was married for over 14 years, and there had been no rumors of extramarital affairs or divorce. The family is residing in Tufnell Park, in north London.

He became a widower after Helen McCrory passed away from cancer on April 16, 2021.

In 2024, it was reported that Damian Lewis was dating Alison Mosshart.

Early Career

Damian Lewis first decided to pursue a career in acting when he was 16 years old. But breaking into acting was not an easy task. He worked odd jobs such as selling car alarms until he landed movie roles.

In 1997, Lewis played Patrick Conner in Robinson Crusoe. In theatre, he appeared as Laertes in Jonathan Kent's production of Hamlet. His performance in the play was seen by Steven Spielberg, who cast him in the film Band of Brothers.

Gradually, he starred in ITV’s series The Forsyte Saga, Dreamcatcher, Keane, Jeffrey Archer: The Truth, Much Ado About Nothing (2005), Stormbreaker (2006), BBC drama Friends and Crocodiles (2006), NBC’s Life, The Baker (2007), The Escapist (2008), The Misanthrope, among others.
