Who is Elon Musk?

Elon Musk is an engineer, entrepreneur, and investor. He is a co-founder of PayPal, co-founder and CEO of Neuralink, co-founder, CEO, and product architect of Tesla, Inc., and founder, CEO, and lead designer of SpaceX.

Elon Musk – Birth, Parents, Siblings

Elon Musk was born on June 28, 1971, in Transvaal, South Africa, as Elon Reeve Musk. His father is Errol Musk, a South African electromechanical engineer, pilot, and sailor, and his mother is Maye Musk, a Canadian model and dietitian. 

He is not the only child of his parents and has siblings too - younger brother Kimbal Musk was born in 1972, and younger sister Tosca Musk was born in 1974. From his father's subsequent marriage(s)/relationships, he has four half-siblings - including Alexandra Musk, Asha Musk, and two from Errol's relationship with his step-daughter Jana Rush.

Education, Ethnicity

Elon Musk was a keen reader and taught himself computer language at the age of 10. He graduated from Pretoria Boys High School and attended Queen's University, Ontario, Canada, when he was 17. He later transferred to the University of Pennsylvania, USA, after two years, where he received an economics degree from the Wharton School and a degree in physics from the College of Arts and Sciences.

He joined a Ph.D. program in applied physics and material sciences at Stanford University in 1995, but dropped out. 

His paternal grandmother was British, and his maternal grandfather was American. He holds Canadian, US, and South African citizenship. His ethnicity includes English, Scottish, Swiss, Belgian, Swedish, Indonesian, French, Dutch, and German.

Elon Musk – Girlfriend, Wife, Children, Divorce

Musk met his girlfriend, Justine Wilson, at Queen's University. Wilson is a Canadian author, and they married in 2000. They had a son named Nevada Alexander Musk, but unfortunately died of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) after 10 weeks of birth. 

Later, they became parents to twins Xavier Musk and Griffin Musk in 2004 and triplets Kai Musk, Saxon Musk, and Damian Musk in 2006 via in-vitro fertilization. Their love life was fading away, so Wilson asked Musk to join counseling to get their love life back, which he agreed to. 

After one month and three sessions of counseling, he gave his wife a one-day ultimatum to fix the marriage. The next day, Elon Musk filed for divorce. According to Wilson, she was "numb" due to his immediate decision.

He began dating English actress Talulah Riley in 2008 and married her in 2010. The marriage ended in divorce in 2012. However, the couple gave love a second chance. They remarried in December 2014 but again divorced in late 2016.

Musk started to date American actress Amber Heard, who was in the process of divorcing actor Johnny Depp, in 2016, but unfortunately, this too didn't last more than a year, and the couple parted ways. 

He started a romantic relationship with Canadian musician Grimes. The pair welcomed son X Æ A-12 Musk in May 2020 and a daughter named Exa Dark Sideræl, via surrogate, in December 2021. They also welcomed son Techno Mechanicus. By this time, their relationship had ended.

It was reported in July 2022 that he had secretly welcomed twins, Strider and Azure, with Shivon Zilis in November 2021. They welcomed their third child, daughter Arcadia Luck, in February 2024 and their fourth child, son Seldon Lycurgus. Zilis is the director of operations and special projects at Neuralink.

He briefly dated actress Natasha Bassett.

In February 2025, author Ashley St. Clair shared she had given birth to son Romulus, fathered by Elon Musk.

Elon Musk – Career

Elon Musk dropped out of Ph.D. after 2 days at Stanford University to begin his entrepreneurial career and launch Zip2 Corporation, a software company that was acquired by Compaq for $340 million in 1999. He founded X.com, which later became PayPal and was bought by eBay for $1.5 billion in October 2002. 

Musk is the CEO and founder of SpaceX, an aerospace manufacturer and space transport company.  He is also the CEO and product architect of Tesla, Inc., an electric vehicle company and solar panel manufacturer. 

Musk co-founded OpenAI to promote artificial intelligence and co-founded Neuralink, a neurotechnology company to develop brain-computer interfaces. He also founded The Boring Company, an infrastructure and tunnel construction company that was used for high-speed transportation systems named Hyperloop.

Musk was named by Inc Magazine as Entrepreneur of the Year in the year 2007 for his work on Tesla and SpaceX. 

Other awards include the National Space Society's Von Braun Trophy in 2008/2009 for the most significant achievement in space, the FAI Gold Space Medal for designing a rocket to reach orbit, the Royal Aeronautical Society's highest award- Gold Medal, Oslo Business for Peace in May 2017.
