Lena Dunham was born on May 13, 1986, in New York City, U.S.A. Her father, Carroll Dunham, worked as a painter, and her mother, Laurie Simmons, worked as an artist, photographer, and member of The Pictures Generation.

She is not the only child of her parents and has a younger sibling, a sister named Grace Dunham.

Early Days

While still a student, Lena Dunham began producing several independent short films and uploading them on YouTube. After several short films, she finally received her breakthrough with the 2010 semi-autobiographic feature film Tiny Furniture. The film was successful, earning several prestigious awards. 

Lena Dunham was signed by HBO. She went on to create the television series Girls, which first aired on April 15, 2012. She wrote, directed, and starred in the critically acclaimed series. The series ran for a total of 6 seasons.

She has also starred in the drama series Scandal (2015), Nobody Walks  (2012), her mother’s film My Art (2016), Adventure Time (2014-2016), My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea (2016), American Horror Story: Cult (2017), Camping (2018), as Catherine "Gypsy" Share in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019).

In 2015, she, along with Jenni Konner, co-founded Lenny Letter, a feminist online newsletter. The newsletter included articles written by Jennifer Lawrence, Alicia Keys, etc. At its height, Lenny Letter had around 500,000 subscribers. 

However, due to a lack of subscribers and the inability to build the website on other platforms, Konner and Dunham have decided to shut down the newsletter.

Lena Dunham signed a $3.5 million deal with Random House to publish her first book in 2012. The book, which is actually an essay collection titled Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She's "Learned," was published in September 2014. 

In 2016, it was revealed that Dunham is writing her second book, which will be published by Random House.

Lena Dunham – Controversy, Health issues

Lena Dunham has been the subject of several controversies, right from her college days.

When a student at Oberlin College, a video of her in a bikini, brushing her teeth in the public fountain, went viral on YouTube. She had received severe backlash for her actions. The New Yorker's Rebecca Mead said, "Her blithe willingness to disrobe without shame caused an outburst of censure from viewers."

In November 2017, she denounced actress Aurora Perrineau's accusation of sexual assault and rape by Murray Miller in 2012, when Perrineau was 17, and Miller was 35. She later released a highly criticized apology for lying about her "insider information."

Due to these issues, American writer Zinzi Clemmons announced that she would no longer contribute to Lenny Letter, adding that Dunham's racism was "well-known" and suggested women of color "divest" from Dunham.

Again in 2016, she was a subject of controversy when she said during a podcast that she wished she'd had an abortion so that she could better understand women who have. She later apologized on Instagram.

Dunham was diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder as a child. For medication, she has been taking a low dose of an antidepressant.

In February 2018, she revealed in an essay for Vogue that she had decided to have a hysterectomy due to endometriosis.
