Who is Lil Nas X?

Lil Nas X is a rapper, singer, and songwriter by profession, and an American by nationality. He came famous via Twitter and is best known for his country-rap single Old Town Road. 

Lil Nas X – Birth, Parents, Siblings

Lil Nas X was born Montero Lamar Hill on April 9, 1999. His birthplace is Atlanta, Georgia, USA. His father, R.L. Stafford, is a gospel singer, while his mother's name is Shawnita Hathaway. Since his parents separated when he was 5 years old, he was raised mostly by his father. Lil Nas X does not have a close relationship with his mother, as she is also a drug addict.

He grew up alongside his ten siblings. Lamarco Hill and Tramon Hill are his full brothers. His half-siblings from his mother's side are Shaquisha Hill and Bianca Hill, and his half-siblings from his father's side are Robert Sleepy, Ashley Stafford, and Labrock Anderson.

In a 2019 phone interview with Time, he said, “My dad initially was like…there’s a million rappers in this industry. They wanted me to go back to school.”

Lil Nas X went on to explain that before fame, everything was very stressful. He would go to his sister’s house to promote his music before coming back home and sleeping three hours a day on the floor because he knew his parents were mad at him for dropping out of school in 2018.

His ethnicity is African-American.

Lil Nas X – Boyfriend, Relationship

Lil Nas X revealed in June 2018 that he never had a girlfriend. On June 27, 2019, which is World Pride Day, he revealed that his sexual orientation is gay. He has yet to share details of his boyfriend.

Although he was taught by his father that being a homosexual is not okay, his father eventually accepted his son's sexuality after coming out in 2019.  His father and sister are the two people who came out first.

He dated Yai Ariza, his backup dancer. He and his boyfriend started dating in August 2021. However, in October 2021, Lil Nas X confirmed that they had broken up.

Lil Nas X – Career

Early Career

Lil Nas X began his career as an internal personality on Twitter. His Nicki Minaj fan account, NasMaraj, had already gained much popularity. Furthermore, he began to make a name for himself through his viral tweets and another fan page, FactsAboutNM.  With an established fan base, he began to make music.

His song Yeehaw caught fire as a meme on TikTok. In the video-sharing app, the young rapper’s song was used by millions to make videos, while the hashtag #yeehaw also began trending.

In 2018, Lil Nas X began uploading his songs to SoundCloud. On July 24, 2018, he released a mixtape titled Nasarati. On December 3, 2018, he released the country rap song Old Town Road. As the #yeehaw challenge had already gone viral, the song also went viral in early 2019. The song reached #1 on Spotify, iTunes, and Apple Music and debuted on Billboard Hot 100 at number 83, climbing to 15.  

By April 9, 2019, his song had reached number 1 on Billboard Hot 100!

Old Town Road also peaked at no 36 in Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and at number 19 in Hot Country Songs. He signed with Columbia Records at the end of March 2019 after the CEO of the company, Ron Perry, contacted him.

The song, which has a mix of rap and country music, was played by Texas Tech during the March Madness win.

Justin Bieber and Florida Georgia Line's Brian Kelley have co-signed with Lil Nas X,, and he also has collaborated with Billy Ray Cyrus in Old Town Road’s remix, released on April 5.

Lil Nas X – Controversy

Lil Nas X’s song Old Town Road was controversially removed from Hot Country Songs in March 2019. Since then, he has received support from Country music star Billy Ray Cyrus via a tweet.

His fan account NasMaraj has since been suspended along with similar fan accounts for violating spam policies, although traces of it can be found online.

Following the controversial removal, he has received public support from stars like Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber.
