Steve Yzerman – Career
Before fame
While still a student, Yzerman played for his hometown Nepean Raiders, followed by seasons with Peterborough Petes from 1981 to 1983.
On October 7, 1986, he was named the captain of the Detroit Red Wings, and in 1995, Steve Yzerman led his team to its first Stanley Cup finals since 1966. But there were still doubts about his ability to lead his team.

After 1995
Steve Yzerman put all the rumors and doubt about his leadership to rest once and for all in 1997 when he led his team to win the Stanley Cup after defeating the Philadelphia Flyers. The next year, too, the Detroit Red Wings won the cup in the finals against the Washington Capitals.
In the 2001 season, he missed the season games as his knee was injured. And in the 2002 playoffs, he did lead his team to victory against the Vancouver Canucks. They defeated the Carolina Hurricanes, winning their tenth Stanley Cup.

After injury
In the same year, 2002, Yzerman underwent knee realignment surgery and returned in February 2003. On May 1, 2004, he was injured again after getting hit in the eye by a deflected slapshot. The injury broke his orbital bone, scratched his cornea, and required eye surgery.
He did miss out remaining 2004 games but returned to the game for the 2005-2006 season. On May 1, 2006, he played his last professional hockey game and announced his retirement from the NHL on July 3, 2006.

The same year, on September 25, 2006, Yzerman was named vice-president and alternate governor of the Detroit Red Wings.
Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick presented him with the key to the city of Detroit on January 2, 2007, and he was introduced to the Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame on January 11, 2008. It was announced on June 23, 2009, that his name would be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
He also worked as the Tampa Bay Lightning’s General Manager (GM) from 2010 to 2018 and has also worked with Team Canada. On April 19, 2019, Steve Yzerman was named the executive vice president and general manager of the Detroit Red Wings, while Ken Holland was promoted to senior vice president.
