Born as James Gabriel Keogh, Vance Joy’s birthplace is in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, and his date of birth falls on 1 December 1987. The names and details of his parents and siblings are not known. However, Joy has confirmed that he has a sister.

He revealed in an interview, “My sister was there, and she didn't know about the rule (mobile phone ban), she had her phone up for about a second and tried to take a photo when I was on stage, and one of them gave her a death stare."

In terms of education, Vance Joy studied at St. Patrick's Primary School, where he was the school captain. He also attended St Kevin's College, graduating from the same in 2005. Furthermore, Hoy attended Monash University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws.

His ethnicity is Australian.

Fans were speculating that actress Sophie Lowe and Vance Joy were dating since July 2018. But the couple had not addressed those speculations.

Finally, in November 2018, after months of speculations, Joy officially announced they were in a relationship while giving his ARIA awards- Adult Contemporary Album acceptance speech, “I just have a list of people I want to thank. My wonderful band. My mum and dad. My beautiful girlfriend Sophie.” Since then, the couple seems to have broken up.

Joy began dating his girlfriend Selen Us, who is a Spanish artist. She is a Senior Art Director at Apartamento Studios and is based in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. They had first met while on his Pink Tour in 2019. They married in June 2023 and have yet to have children. There has been no news of divorce surrounding the pair.

Vance Joy – Career

Football player

Before getting into a music career, Vance Joy was also an aspiring football player. In the years 2008 and 2009, he played for Coburg Football Club as a defender in the Victorian Football League (VFL). In 2008, he was awarded the best first-year player award, while in 2009, he was a member of a leadership group.

Despite being considered a promising football player, he chose to pursue a career in music.

Speaking of his choice to give up football to be a singer, he explains, "For a period of time, I was super focused on footy, I played a step below professional level. I had opportunities to play for a couple of teams, but my heart wasn't completely in it. I guess I was just doing something in the meantime before writing my first songs....good enough to go from local footy to the VFL. Out of three seasons, I had a handful of games. You always think you can do better, but I think I reached my potential as a football player."

After Vance Joy gave up football and focused on making music, he released his debut single From Afar on 21 January 2013. The same year, on 22 March, he released his first Ep titled God Loves You When You're Dancing, which included Riptide. 

The track became an instant hit, reaching number 6 on the Australian Record Industry Association Singles Chart and was named triple platinum by the Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA) while it reached number 30 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number 1 on the Alternative and Rock Airplay charts. Joy’s football team made a tradition of playing the song at every home game.

Vance Joy’s debut album titled Dream Your Life Away was released on 5 September 2014 in Australia and on 9 September 2014 in the United States. The song Mess Is Mine reached 37 in Australia. Following the success of his album, he started his tour from Melbourne, which continued worldwide.

The year 2014 was a busy year for Joy. He toured in the US while performing as the supporting act for Taylor Swift's The 1989 World Tour, among other major performances.

On 23 February 2018, Vance Joy released his second studio album titled Nation of Two. This album too was a success, reaching number 1 in Australia, and was certified gold by the ARIA. In November 2018, Joy released Live at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, a live album.

In addition, Vance Joy has made guest appearances on NBC's Today Show, hosted by Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb, and season 14 of American Idol. He has made endless tours- Dream Your Life Away Tour from 2013 to 2014, The Fire and the Flood Tour in 2016, and Nation of Two World Tour in 2018.
