Who is Prabal Gurung?

Prabal Gurung is a fashion designer by profession and Nepalese, American by nationality. He is well known for his designer clothes and has dressed Michelle Obama, Demi Moore, and Oprah Winfrey.

Prabal Gurung – Birth, Parents, Siblings

Prabal Gurung’s birth took place on March 31, 1979, in Singapore to Nepalese parents. His mother, Durga Rana, owned a boutique store, while his father, Krishna Gurung, was in the army.

His parents raised him between Kathmandu and Singapore alongside his two siblings, brother Pravesh Gurung, who is a film director, and sister Kumudini Gurung Shrestha, who is a teacher and social worker.

He was raised in Nepal, were studied at St. Xavier’s School. After earning a bachelor’s degree in hotel management, he moved to New Delhi, India. He then went to study at the National Institute of Fashion Technology in India and Parsons School of Design in New York City, USA.

His ethnicity is Nepalese.

Gurung has not been known to date anyone and is gay by sexuality. He has never been seen with a boyfriend and is considered single, although a secret affair cannot be ruled out. 

In 2019, it was speculated that he was dating Indian filmmaker Karan Johar. However, the news turned out to be false. According to reports, he is in a relationship with his boyfriend, Paul.

Gurung has never married and is sans husband and children. Since he has never married, divorce is out of context.

Prabal Gurung – Career

After graduating from the National Institute of Fashion Technology, he traveled for seven years. Finally, Prabal Gurung moved to New York City in 1999, where he studied at Parsons School of Design. In his first year at Parsons, he was awarded the Best Designer Award at the annual Parsons/FIT design competition.

He then spent two years with Cynthia Rowley's design team before working for American fashion designer Bill Blass for five years.

In February 2009, Gurung launched PRABAL GURUNG, his first eponymous collection during New York Fashion Week. And in 2013, he was selected as a design collaborator for Target, and in 2014 collaborated with MAC Cosmetics to launch a product. In 2017, Prabal Gurung launched a capsule with Lane Bryant.

He also dressed famous names in Hollywood, including  Michelle Obama, Demi Moore, Oprah Winfrey, Anne Hathaway, Kerry Washington, Jennifer Lawrence, Zoe Saldana, and Sarah Jessica Parker.

He has also designed dresses for Kate Hudson, Scarlett Johansson, January Jones, Amanda Seyfried, Emma Watson, Lady Gaga, Elettra Wiedemann, and Marion Cotillard.

Prabal Gurung – Awards, Nominations

Prabal Gurung received the Ecco Domani Fashion Fund Award  (2010) and was the runner-up for the 2010 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund. He also received a nomination for the 2010 CFDA/Swarovski Womenswear Award.
