Darius Garland’s birth took place on January 26, 2000, in Gary, Indiana, USA. He was born to his mother Felicia Garland and his father Winston Garland, a former professional basketball player. He is not the only child of his parents and has five siblings – older sister Kacie Garland and older brothers Desmond  Garland, Cody Garland, Miguel Garland, and Hilton Garland.

Early Career

Garland began playing baseball and basketball when he was just 5 years old. As he grew up, he focused more on the latter sport. He continued playing through elementary school and also attended basketball camps in the third grade. By fourth grade, he had already started playing with a travel team. 

He joined the Brentwood Academy varsity basketball team while in eighth grade.

High School, College

While on the freshman season, Darius Garland averaged 13 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game, leading his team to a Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) Division II-AA state championship.

Garland was ranked the best point guard in the 2018 class by recruiting service 247Sports in his senior season of high school. He committed to play for Vanderbilt in November 2017.

His stats for the 2018-19 season are 5 GP, 5 GS, 27.8 MPG, .537 FG%, 0.478 3P%, 3.8 RPG, 2.6 APG, 0.8 SPG, 0.4 BPG, 16.2 PPG. He left Vanderbilt to recover from his injury and prepare for the 2019 NBA draft. He was selected fifth overall in the 2019 NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers.
