R. J. Hampton’s birth took place on February 7, 2001, in Texas, USA. He was born Roderick Hampton Jr. to his father, Roderick Hampton Sr., and his mother, Markita Hampton. He is not the only child of his parents and has a younger sibling, a brother named Ryan Hampton.

His father, Rod, had played college basketball for SMU from 1987 to 1991.

For education, he attended Scoggins Middle School and later Little Elm High School, graduating in 2019. He was reported to be opting for the University of Kansas, the University of Memphis, and Texas Tech University. But in May 2019, it was reported that R.J. Hampton had opted against the traditional collegiate route.

R.J. Hampton first played basketball when he was 3 years old. In Little Elm High School, he played varsity basketball for two seasons. On March 15, 2019, he was named Texas Gatorade Player of the Year, making him the first non-senior to win the award since 2013.

Hampton has won two gold medals in his short career- at the 2017 FIBA Under-16 Americas Championship with the United States national under-16 team and at the 2018 FIBA Under-17 Basketball World Cup with the United States national under-17 team.

R.J. Hampton also earned USA Today All-USA first-team and MaxPreps All-American second-team recognition. On May 28, 2019, it was reported that he had signed a multi-year deal with the New Zealand Breakers of the National Basketball League (NBA) as part of the Next Stars initiative.

As he is not eligible for the new NBA G League venture, he will have to wait for the 2020 NBA Draft, as high school players must wait for a year to become draft eligible.
