Early days

Hachimura used to play baseball as a catcher and pitcher when he was young. In high school, he led his team to its second title in the All-Japan High School Tournament, scoring 32 points in a 92–78 win over Fukuoka University Ohori and again in 2014.

In April 2015, he was invited to the Jordan Brand Classic. On November 21, 2015, Rui Hachimura signed a National Letter of Intent with Gonzaga Bulldogs in the USA to play college basketball. But language and cultural barriers required him to attend a prep school before entering Gonzaga.

With the Gonzaga Bulldogs

Rui Hachimura’s debut was on November 11, 2016, against Utah Valley. With the Gonzaga Bulldogs, he played against Mississippi Valley State, South Dakota State, Idaho State, and Duke.
